Our winners this week were Precious Lewis and Christian Bradley. Both students worked really hard in getting signatures. All the students are getting involved so they can try and be the winner for the week. Please continue to encourage your child to read to someone every day.

Fact Families
Today the students worked on fact families. They took a deck of cards and turned two over at a time. They then had to add the two to get a sum. Once they had their three numbers they then created two addition and two subtraction problems using the three numbers in that family. They also created houses with their fact families. They really enjoyed this activity and did an awesome job!!

The Great Poetry Race!!!
As you already know, we are doing the Great Poetry Race with our students in reading. This is an idea that works on the students fluency skills. Fluency is being able to recognize words automatically and not having to stop and sound out the words. It also includes how smooth the reader reads and how they are able to include expression and prosody to their reading. Being a fluent reader also aides in their ability to comprehend, which is the ultimate goal in reading. These poems are given to the students on Friday. We go over the poem and practice it several times in class. Then the students take the poems and try to read them to as many people as possible by the next Friday. The two students who get the most signatures are the winners for that week. They get to wear a gold medal for the day. We will be posting videos and pictures of the winners we have had so far this year. The students seem to love the competition and it is also increasing their reading abilities.
Oct.31st-Nov.4th
This week we are reading the story "The Strongest One." This is a fantasy written as a play. Ask your child why we call the story a fantasy. We plan to practice the play and design masks that go with the characters and perfrom it for another class. Be on the "lookout" for their amazing and vocabulary words!
Please make sure your child is studing their spelling lists each night.
In math this week we are learning about fact families. The students are really catching on to these. Make sure they keep practicing their math facts, addition and subtraction.
